Lie Shi

President

Lie joined Celgard in 1991 through Hoechst Celanese Corporation (HCC), Celgard's former parent company, as a research scientist working on lithium polymer batteries and polymeric fiber development. He was named technical manager of the HCC Separation Division in 1997, that later became Celgard, LLC. In 2000, he was promoted to vice president, research & development (R&D), where he used his battery separator expertise to lead Celgard’s pioneering R&D efforts for more than a decade and contributed to its emergence as a leading material supplier in the lithium-ion battery industry. Lie assumed the role of vice president & chief technology officer (CTO), separator technology in 2014. He attended Beijing University in China and received his Bachelor of Science in physics from Kyoto University in Japan. Lie also holds a Master of Science in physics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Jonathan Castellaw

Global Director, Human Resources

Jonathan joined Celgard in 2018 as the director of human resources (HR). He has held business partner and leadership roles in HR at United Technologies Corporation, Raytheon Company, Hyster-Yale Group and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Jonathan holds a Master of industrial and labor relations from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Science in business management from Clemson University.

John Harn

John Harn

Regional Strategic Leader in Korea

John joined Celgard in 2008 as managing director of Celgard Korea and transferred to Celgard U.S. to lead the product and process quality innovation team. John managed global Celgard operations as vice president by bringing his extensive knowledge of Kaizen philosophy and best practices in chemical, thermoplastic and separator manufacturing industries. John also holds multiple international IPs including one for an Optical Camber Measurement (OCM) system that contributes to establishing standard of film bagginess measurement in LiB separator industry. John holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in operations research from Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea.

Noah Ka

Global Director, Strategic Marketing

Noah joined Celgard in 2020 as the director of strategic marketing. Noah brings over 18 years of experience from Samsung SDI where most recently he served and was responsible for sales and marketing for growing business in various battery-powered vehicles and systems. He progressed through roles of increasing responsibility in sales and marketing, audit, operations and human resources. Noah holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Emory University Goizueta Business School in Atlanta, Georgia, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in nuclear engineering from Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea.

Andrew Kankula

Vice President, Specialty Business

Andrew joined Celgard in 2019 as the vice president of global sales. As an accomplished executive with over 25 years of experience leading businesses and sales organizations in the automotive, specialty chemicals and renewable energy industries, Andrew drives growth and all global commercial activities for Celgard. Most recently, Andrew served as president for the power generation products business of Power Systems West and has also served in various executive sales and operational roles for diverse automotive companies like Umicore, Volvo and Freudenberg-NOK. Andy holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in finance from the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan and a Bachelor of Science in psychology and labor relations from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

Stepan Kazakov

Stepan Kazakov

Vice President, Global Information Technology Applications

Stepan is vice president of global information technology (IT) applications for Polypore International, LP, Celgard’s parent company. He joined Polypore in 2011 and has served on Celgard’s leadership team since 2015. Before joining Polypore, he held various technical and leadership roles in IT with Eaton Corporation, Fromagerie Bel and Springs Window Fashions. Stepan has a Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science and electrical engineering from The Ohio State University. Stepan also has a master’s degree in information technology from University of Phoenix and a Ph.D. in economics from the Russian Academy of Sciences.

James Reynolds

James Reynolds

Director of Manufacturing & Operational Excellence

James joined Celgard in 2008 and has held multiple positions in process engineering, production management and as plant manager for the Charlotte facility, driving continuous improvement and cost reduction. Before joining Celgard, James worked at Milliken & Company focusing on manufacturing excellence in both textile and chemical industries. James earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University.

Adam Thompson

Adam Thompson

Global Director, Finance and Accounting

Adam joined Celgard in 2017 and currently leads the company’s global finance function. Prior to this appointment, Adam served as financial reporting manager and then corporate controller for Celgard’s parent company, Polypore International, LP. In those roles, he first led the company’s corporate accounting, global consolidation and external reporting to the SEC, and additionally, the acquisition and transition accounting and reporting integration following Asahi Kasei’s 2015 acquisition of Polypore. Adam joined Polypore in 2014 after nine years in public accounting with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Charlotte, NC, Lausanne, Switzerland, and Chicago, IL, where he served large, multi-national manufacturing and consumer products audit clients. He holds a Master of Accounting from UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and a Bachelor of Science in business administration, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

John Zhang, Ph.D.

John Zhang, Ph.D.

Chief Technology Officer and Regional Strategic Leader in China

John is recognized as the leading authority on lithium-ion battery safety and separators. He is a leader in establishing lithium-ion battery industry standards (P1625, P1725 and CTIA) through the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has chaired and/or organized more than 60 international conferences and delivered more than 60 invited keynote or plenary speeches at various international conferences. John has published more than 110 patents, papers and books, including the first ceramic coating separator patent (US 6, 432, 586) and some of the most cited papers (Chem. Reviews, 2004 and Li-ion safety papers 2006-now). Zhang received his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Shanghai University. He holds a Master of Science in electrochemistry from Shandong University and a Ph.D. in material chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has also completed additional postdoctoral studies in nuclear interactions.
